Eligible Ages: 50 - 85 Status: Recruiting
Time Since Diagnosis: Any may be eligible Study Focus: Bradykinesia (slowness of movement), rigidity, Cognitive Deficits, Gait disturbances (e.g., freezing), Postural Instability (falling)

Study Purpose:

This pilot study is to test the effect of combining cognitive training with physical exercise (SMARTfit training) in people with Parkinson’s disease.

This pilot study is to test the effect of combining cognitive training with physical exercise (SMARTfit training) to improve movement, ability to carry out daily activities, thinking ability, disease biomarkers as well as brain function in people with Parkinson’s disease. Participants will receive two physical training programs (SMARTfit training and conventional physical training). Each training program includes 24 1-hour training sessions, 3 sessions per week for 8 weeks. There will be evaluations before and after each 8-week training. Participants will perform evaluation tests, surveys, and receive a blood draw. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) will be used to measure brain function. The study will be conducted at University of Southern California Health Sciences Campus. The body of knowledge that will help us understand the types of physical training that may benefit someone with Parkinson's disease. In the future this can have a great impact on the intervention that people with Parkinson’s disease receive.
